Frequently asked questions
Visibility/Performance/ KristalBond Energy Saving
What is KristalBond performance?
-
Infrared ray(IR) - 90% -
Ultraviolet ray(UV) - 99% -
Visibility(VL) - 75%
How does my glass change after it has been applied with KristalBond?
KristalBond is retrofitted on glass, converting normal glass to be energy efficient.
How can KristalBond block heat since its Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is high?
Tint glass blocks out more visible light, yet allows infrared transmission. Whereas, KristalBond blocks 90% of Infrared ray, yet allowing high visible light transmission of 75%. As such, you get more light rather than heat.
Will KristalBond cut/block the incoming sunlight and make the interior dark?
No, the visible light transmission drops by 10~14% after KristalBond application. For example, a 6mm clear float glass has a VLT of 85%, after it has been treated with KristalBond, the VLT is reduced to 70%. Most tint films have a VLT range of 45%~ 20%.
How much energy can I save after using KristalBond?
On the average, KristalBond reduces temperature by 3-5°C, and on extreme cases, 7-10°C. KristalBond can help you save up to 30% in energy savings and reduce CO2 emission.
Is KristalBond's technology Energy Absorptive or Reflective?
-
Irritating glare to other buildings -
Trapping heat in the city or sland effect -
Insecurity from lack of visibility -
Use of artificial lighting increases energy usage
How can the 10% of Infrared transmittance give 55% of DET (Solar transmission)?
-
The total solar spectrum wavelength covers from 280 to 2,500 nanometer. -
Ultraviolet, Visible light and Infrared occupies 2%, 47% and 51% of the total solar energy respectively. -
KristalBond coating transmits 10% Infrared. -
The remainder 50% solar energy which comes from UV and Visible light are not addressed. -
Hence DET 55% is the result.
Does KristalBond coating remove glare?
KristalBond provides slight reduction in VLT, however, it does not remove glare completely. The main target of KristalBond is to stay clear for maximum daylight harvesting.
Will KristalBond distort the vision like tint films?
-
Micro coating technology - only 7 microns thickness -
Chemically bonds onto glass (no adhesives) -
Glass-like material and finishing -
Self-leveling properties for smooth finishing
Physical properties / warranty of KristalBond
What is KristalBond's durability, does it delaminate or peel like tint films?
KristalBond's composition is similar to glass. It chemically bonds to glass without the use of adhesives, thus it will not delaminate nor peel. This is why KristalBond provides a 15-year warranty on its coating.
How thick is KristalBond as compared to tint films?
The KristalBond layer is only 7 microns, whilst tint films have the thickness in the range of 30-40 microns.
Is KristalBond scratch resistant? What is the hardness of the coating?
Using the Pencil Scratch Test in accordance to JIS K5600-5-4:1999, KristalBond鈥檚 coating hardness is 6H whilst tint films are in the range of 3 - 4H.
Is KristalBond fire resistant?
KristalBond is combustion resistant, tested under JIS R3211:1998 and JIS R3212:1998. It is non-flammable upon direct contact with fire.
Application of KristalBond
Is there a maximum / minimum area KristalBond can be applied to?
There is no limitation to the area size, or height of the glass. The width of a single area can be as wide as 4m / 12ft.
Will KristalBond leave any noticeable joints?
Tint films which come in a fixed size leaves visible joints if the glass is wide. Applied in liquid form, the KristalBond coating is seamless. You will not see joints on the coated glass.
Are there any glass types that cannot be coated?
-
Reflective glass (coated side) -
Low-E glass (coated side) -
Frosted glass (treated side) -
Decorative (printed side) -
Wired glass.
Is KristalBond coated on the interior or exterior side of the glass?
KristalBond is applied on the glass surface facing the interior of the premise for durability.
How long does it take to apply KristalBond?
Depending on the total glass area and its accessibility, the duration taken varies from project to project. As a guide, averagely a team can complete 50m2/ 430ft2 per day. Kindly consult your KristalBond's representative for an estimation.
Do I need to remove my furniture before application work?
You will only need to remove fixtures such as curtains, blinds and furnishing that may obstruct the application process. If you are unsure, our Application Team will advice you.
My building is under construction / re-construction now, what is the best time to coat my glass with KristalBond?
Can KristalBond be applied directly onto tint film?
No. We have to remove the film first before applying KristalBond.
There is an odour after applying KristalBond, what is it, is it harmful?
Similar to commercial paints, KristalBond contain solvents that will dissipate after a day. Remove the smell by opening the windows to ventilate the area. The amount of solvents used in the product is within the threshold specified by the relevant authorities (like many household chemicals).
What is KristalBond's Application Process like?
Here's what we will do:
-
Protect your fixed furniture and the areas near the glass with plastic sheets and protective tapes -
Clean the glass to be free from dust and oil -
Coat the glass with KristalBond
How long does it take to dry before I can touch / clean the glass?
-
1 hour before it becomes what is known as "Tack free". -
7 days for full curing. You may clean your glass as usual with soft cloth and glass cleaner.
KristalBond is a liquid coating, will dust be attracted to it and ruin its finishing? How do you minimise the particle level?
-
Laying out protective sheets -
Thoroughly cleaning the glass -
Vacuuming the work area -
Controlling the number of personnel at the site
Do you need to dismantle the glass panel to coat?
No. Coating can be performed on site, without removing the glass from the frames.
How do you ensure the consistency of the coating's thickness?
For a uniformed finishing, our trained applicators control the amount of the liquid applied on a specific area based on a specific ratio.
Maintenance of KristalBond
How do I maintain a KristalBonded glass?
You can clean the glass using a soft cloth and mild glass cleaners. Avoid using highly acidic or alkaline detergents.
I accidentally scratched the KristalBond coated glass, can it be fixed?
Unfortunately, we are not able to patch the scratch. To rectify, we have to remove the coating and re-apply KristalBond.
